Independence Day

Every year on June 12, the Philippines celebrates Independence Day, one of the most important national holidays in the country. It marks the day in 1898 when Filipino revolutionary leaders declared the country’s independence from Spanish rule. That moment happened in Kawit, Cavite, where General Emilio Aguinaldo raised the Philippine flag and the national anthem was played for the first time.

Today, Independence Day is a public holiday. Government offices, schools, and most businesses close, and Filipinos across the country and abroad take a moment to remember the struggles and sacrifices that led to their freedom. It is a time to honour national heroes, reflect on history, and show pride in being Filipino.

The main celebration usually takes place in Luneta Park in Manila, where the president leads a flag-raising ceremony and delivers a speech. Similar programs take place in other cities and provinces, featuring parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and cultural performances. Soldiers, veterans, students, and civic groups frequently participate in these events.

You will also see homes and buildings decorated with Philippine flags. During the National Flag Days from May 28 to June 12, people are encouraged to display the flag as a sign of unity and patriotism. Schools also host activities such as quiz bees, poster-making contests, and special lectures on history and national identity.

For some, the holiday is also a chance to relax. Families spend the day together, attend local events, or take a break from their usual routines. It is a mix of reflection, celebration, and rest.

Independence Day reminds Filipinos of the country’s origins and the sacrifices made to achieve freedom. Even though the struggles continued long after 1898, that day in Kawit still stands as a powerful symbol of the people’s fight for self-rule.
